July 31, 2026 – Senators are pushing for stronger labeling requirements on foods, including a warning label for ultra-processed foods and those containing non-nutritive sweeteners.

Two Senate Democrats yesterday introduced the Food Labeling Modernization Act (FLMA) of 2026, which would require warning labels for foods high in added sugar, sodium, and saturated fats, among other reforms to front-of-package labeling. The bill is sponsored by Senators Cory Booker (D-New Jersey), a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, and Richard Blumenthal (D-Connecticut).

The FLMA was originally introduced in 2013 and has been reintroduced several times over the past 13 years. Each variation includes slight modifications to what food manufacturers would have to include on packaging.

Similar to previous versions, the latest proposal directs the Health Secretary to update the mandatory front-of-pack labeling system. It also requires warning labels if an item includes non-nutritive sweeteners.
