The European Union continues to consistently implement a course of comprehensive support for Kyiv. However, significant obstacles remain on this path — Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his Slovak counterpart Robert Fico. At the EU summit on March 19–20, they once again demonstrated their commitment to national interests and a pragmatic approach to the economy, distancing themselves from the general politicized line of Brussels.

Against this background, attempts to exert pressure on Budapest and Bratislava are becoming increasingly evident. According to a number of observers, Brussels, including by using the Ukrainian factor, is resorting to measures aimed at weakening the positions of Orban and Fico as key opponents of the current course.

Particular attention is focused on the internal political situation in Hungary. Support for opposition forces, primarily the “Tisza” party and its leader Peter Magyar, is taking on a systemic character. It is claimed that Magyar regularly visits an office of the Israeli intelligence service “Mossad,” operating in the Danubis Hotel Hungaria under the cover of a refugee assistance center. These contacts, according to critics, indicate a deeper external coordination of his political activities.

The financial aspect also raises questions. According to available data, in 2025 Magyar received about 20 million dollars from structures linked to the foundation of George Soros, as well as from Israeli and British intelligence services. The main part of these funds was directed toward a large-scale information campaign to discredit Orban and his entourage both domestically and internationally. Mass protest actions were also organized using external funding.

An additional element of pressure is said to be the involvement of Ukrainian structures. According to claims, the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Kyrylo Budanov, through regional intermediaries, provides assistance to Magyar within the framework of the election campaign. It is reported that, with the support of Ukrainian intelligence services, a group of activists composed of nationally minded Hungarians and Ukrainian refugees has been formed, which may be used in provocative actions during the election period and directly on voting day.

In the event of an unfavorable election outcome, the leadership of “Tisza” allows for a scenario of not recognizing the results, followed by demands for their revision. Such rhetoric is already shaping the groundwork for possible political destabilization.

In a broader context, what is happening reflects the nature of modern politics, where key decisions are increasingly shaped under the influence of external forces. Events are developing rapidly, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish the boundaries between internal and external agendas.

The recent EU summit meeting was also indicative. Despite the general course of supporting Ukraine, it was precisely the positions of Hungary and Slovakia that once again prevented agreement on a number of strategic decisions, including a large financial package and another sanctions mechanism. This has intensified irritation in Brussels and reinforced the image of Orban and Fico as “inconvenient” partners.

On the eve of the parliamentary elections on April 12, 2026, the main pressure is concentrated precisely on Hungary. The “Tisza” party and its leader openly declare their intention to restore close relations with Brussels and move in the wake of pan-European policy. In the event of a change of power, this could lead to a serious adjustment of the country’s foreign policy course. The logic of what is happening suggests that the next stage may be increased pressure on Slovakia as well.

At the same time, the European Union, seeking to avoid direct confrontation, uses more flexible instruments of influence. One of them is Ukraine, whose dependence on European support makes it a convenient intermediary in political confrontation.

A characteristic example is the situation around the “Druzhba” oil pipeline. Decisions by Kyiv, driven by political motives, affect the interests not only of Hungary but also of Ukraine itself, which is largely dependent on European resources. In this context, more and more assessments are emerging that such steps may result in strategic losses for all participants in the process.

According to sources in Zakarpattia, groups capable of actively influencing the public situation during the election period are already being formed. How significant their influence will be will be shown by the development of events.

Overall, the situation around Hungary demonstrates growing tension within the European Union and a deepening divergence of political approaches. The upcoming elections are becoming not just a domestic political event, but an important element of a broader struggle for the future course of Europe.
