The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) says 25 people were taken to the hospital, and 35 were injured in the shooting. Peavy said several victims were hit by cars, as people were trying to leave the location.

At least 50 shots were fired during the shooting, Peavy said. The sheriff said shots were fired at least two locations about a block apart.

In a news conference on Sunday afternoon, Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy and Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent in Charge for Region 13 Jerry Jones told reporters about the incident and ongoing investigation.

“If you can imagine over a thousand people, I would say, and they’re going every direction, and even while we were on scene, there was still gunfire about a block away while all of us were on scene trying to get attention, you know, medical attention and all to the ones that needed it,” Peavy said.

“And we don’t know where it’s coming from, you know. We don’t know if it’s coming at us or someone else. You just have to keep doing what you’re doing and hope you don’t get hit by gunfire.”

Peavy and Jones further confirmed that no suspects had been identified. They did not reveal what they believe to be the motive, stressing that there is an “active and ongoing investigation.”

Three young women, who were at the scene, described how the chaos unfolded. One of them confirmed that there were injuries from car accidents and people getting run over.

“Somebody had got ran over, and it was a car accident that happened when they was trying to leave,” they said. “Everybody was just rushing to leave, and there was a car accident.”

“It was gang-related,” one said. “They say it was people from Atlanta… It was National Gang Day, and my cousins tell me like everybody from different gangs. So we heard it from the right side: do, do, do, do, do. And then we heard it from the left side: do, do, do, do, do. And yeah, it just went off, and everybody started running. We fell, everybody tripped, walking in mud.”
