Atlas Shrugged

As we watch in 2026, businesses flee the communistic cities and states of America for the free states of America. The America prophet, Ayn Rand, warned America and the world more than 75 years ago about what is happening today. In her novel Atlas Shrugged, Rand foresaw, on a nation-wide scale, what we are seeing in California, New York state, Washington state, Oregon, Virginia, and every Democrat-ruled city in America.

Rand was born in Russian in 1905, and she lived through the Russian Revolution. She was educated in Russia, so she knew a little bit about communism. Rand legally emigrated to the United States in 1926 and became an American citizen in 1931. In Atlas Shrugged when the takers of the United States began taking too much while producing nothing, the most productive people said “hell no,” shut down and abandoned their businesses, disappeared, and allowed the government to run out of other people’s money.

In the last decade we have seen a modern day version of what Rand foretold. Since then we have only a few states that have adopted the type of draconian measure described by Rand. Businesses don’t have to disappear; they only have to move to the free states that have a more friendly business environment, and they are. Opening in July was the brand new Texas Stock Exchange and guess what they are targeting? Many of the largest New York trading houses have already established major operations outside of New York City. How soon before the “headquarters” of these firms actually move out of New York City?

Individuals and businesses are voting with their feet

Individuals and businesses are voting with their feet. Trillions of dollars of business value and billions of dollars of tax revenue have fled “blue” jurisdictions for the free states. Do these communist run strongholds get it? Not so far. California and New York City are talking about taxing millionaires and billionaires, a sure way to run those people out of town, the very people who have been supporting the rush to socialist policies. What a way to thank them. But not to worry because they will be gone soon. So much for the “warm comfort of collectivism.”

Then there are the government operated grocery stores, Mamdani’s most wonderful idea. I just read that Kansas City has now closed all seven of their government operated stores. Why? No selection and minimal products. Oh, and they ran out of other people’s money.

Communism as Marx and Engels described it is a beautiful, beautiful theory. However, to make it work as described requires one crucial element that is impossible to obtain. That element is perfect human beings that are willing to work as hard as they can and share with each other equally. No such perfect people exist on the earth. Socialism, communism, and warm collectivism has and will always fail as history has demonstrated time after time. Nobody is smart enough to change human nature and make the unworkable work.
