The debate over how artificial intelligence should be regulated is intensifying as governments and the public confront increasingly powerful AI systems. In New York City, lawmakers held a major hearing on Monday involving representatives and former employees of companies including OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind.

Former AI workers warned that the industry is moving too quickly and that voluntary self-regulation may not be enough. New York officials are considering measures requiring greater disclosure, independent audits and protections for AI whistleblowers.

At the federal level, the Trump administration is taking a different approach, emphasizing rapid technological development while relying heavily on voluntary safeguards. Trump has created a new “Super Intelligence Force,” led by National Intelligence Director Jay Clayton, to coordinate the government’s AI efforts.

This follows a voluntary agreement with several major technology companies that includes promises concerning AI safety and outside audits, but Reuters reported that the agreement contains no stated consequences if companies fail to comply. Critics argue that this raises questions about whether voluntary commitments can adequately address the risks associated with increasingly powerful AI systems.
