I have recently been making some USO videos for my Youtube channel. Certainly a way to promote my new book (now in Audiobook format!), but also because the cases are simply fascinating. This is a short 16 minute piece on a Soviet case from 1982 — once again illustrated by Allan. 

I really am drawn to this one. Like many Soviet cases, there’s not really much to hang onto, but that doesn’t make these cases worth dismissing. Not at all. This one at least has a relatively specific date, the name of the main witness, and the name of the ship in question. This doesn’t prove it, of course, but these are things you certainly want to have.

I am fascinated by Soviet USO cases. In May 1982, near Kamchatka, Soviet naval officer A. Sokolov and two crewmen reportedly saw a massive cigar-shaped object rise silently from the Pacific, climb into the sky, show four rear lights, and vanish. In this video, I examine this little-known Cold War USO case, its Soviet naval context, and its place in the larger mystery of unidentified objects operating in and around the oceans.
