Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James over a state law restricting local law enforcement agencies from cooperating with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The lawsuit challenges the Local Cops, Local Crimes Act, which allows the state to take legal action against sheriffs who maintain 287(g) agreements with ICE. Supporters of the agreements argue they allow local law enforcement to work with federal immigration officials to transfer criminal offenders for deportation. Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar says the law undermines the constitutional authority and independence of elected sheriffs and could threaten public safety.
