Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayPresident Donald Trump on Tuesday morning went on a freewheeling social media blitz as he faces his first big election test since returning to the White House.
In the space of a few hours, the president meddled with food aid, stirred up the New York City mayoral race, made dubious claims about California’s redistricting vote and championed abolishing the filibuster. He also jabbed at a long-standing media foe.
His scattershot interventions came as millions of voters cast ballots in state and local elections, including a pair of competitive races for governor in New Jersey and Virginia and the contest to run the nation’s largest city.
Trump looms large over the off-year elections given his pitched battles with governors and mayors as he’s sent National Guard troops across the country and pushed a crackdown on immigration.
Voting comes as the president’s approval rating has plummeted in a series of polls, with many of the elections seen as a referendum on Trump’s job so far.
Against that backdrop, Trump reached for the fire hose and blasted out a series of posts.
Most significantly, he suggested that federal food benefits won’t be distributed until after Democrats agree to reopen the government.
In a Truth Social message, Trump said Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits “will be given only when the Radical Left Democrats open up government, which they can easily do, and not before!”
The move represents a reversal from Monday, when the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which administers SNAP, said it would abide by court orders to pay at least partial benefits by accessing a contingency fund.
But confusion surrounded his comments after Trump’s own press secretary contradicted his remarks, saying food benefits would in fact go out during the shutdown.
Trump also attempted to stoke religious divisions in the New York City mayoral race as he again went after Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic candidate and front-runner.
The president already backed Mamdani’s rival, Andrew Cuomo, and falsely labeled the state assemblymember a communist, but went further on Tuesday.
“Any Jewish person that votes for Zohran Mamdani, a proven and self professed JEW HATER, is a stupid person!!!” the president wrote, without citing evidence.
During the campaign, Republicans have repeatedly attempted to demonize the 34-year-old democratic socialist, who could become the city’s first Muslim mayor.
Trump then found time to comment on a ballot measure in California, claiming that the “Unconstitutional” Proposition 50 vote is “a GIANT SCAM” and “RIGGED.”
He added all mail-in ballots were under “very serious legal and criminal review.”
Trump gave no evidence for any of his allegations.
Proposition 50, if approved, would see five GOP-held seats in the state eliminated, counteracting Republican efforts to abolish five Democratic-held seats in Texas.
In response to Trump, California Gov. Gavin Newsom was dismissive.
“The ramblings of an old man that knows he’s about to LOSE,” Newsom wrote.
Trump also returned to his call for Senate Republicans to abolish the filibuster rule, suggesting it is a way for the GOP to entrench power.
The president last week proposed blowing up the filibuster to end the government shutdown, but on Tuesday championed his plan as vital to delivering longer-term policy goals in the face of opposition from “Crazed Democrat Lunatics.”
Getting rid of the rule requiring most bills to secure 60 votes to advance in the Senate would lead to “Great Policy Wins after Wins after Wins,” he argued.
“WE WILL BE THE PARTY THAT CANNOT BE BEATEN — THE SMART PARTY!!!,” Trump wrote, switching to all-caps.
Proponents of the filibuster argue that it forces bipartisan compromise on bills, since members of both parties are typically needed to reach a 60-vote threshold.
Currently, Republicans have a 53-seat majority in the Senate, and the party’s leadership has thus far been cool on Trump’s proposal.
Trump had no public events scheduled for Tuesday, according to daily guidance from the White House.
But another post suggested the president may have been hate-watching MSNBC’s flagship politics show, “Morning Joe,” as the country went to the polls.
“Wow! Joe Scarborough’s Television Ratings are really bad. They have gone, as they say, ‘down the tubes,’ as has the rest of MSNBC,” Trump wrote, referencing co-host Joe Scarborough, soon after Mamdani had appeared on the show.
“It’s a beautiful thing to watch!” the president added.
