Residents in Saggart on the south-west fringes of Dublin still proudly refer to their leafy town with traditional Irish pub, church and local high street as a village.

But the sleepy community has seen itself become the front line of unrest as Ireland’s migrant crisis explodes into fiery disorder amid tensions over a local hotel housing 2,300 asylum seekers – one third the town’s total population.

Riots have convulsed quiet Saggart for the past two nights after the alleged sexual assault of a 10-year-old Irish girl by a 26-year-old African migrant due to be deported outside the controversial Citywest hotel.
