Reiki Level One training is a wonderful way to learn how to care for yourself and for those in your family. By incorporating values like kindness, honesty, gratitude, and calmness, principles respected across many spiritual traditions, Reiki offers an accessible path for anyone seeking to strengthen their spiritual health. For example, by spending a few minutes each day meditating on the Reiki precepts, you will develop more gratitude and compassion for the simple things in life. Similarly, placing your hands gently on your body in the Reiki hand positions, while practicing mindful breathing, will leave you with a sense of calmness and emotional balance. These simple Reiki exercises make it easy to develop a regular daily practice of personal growth and well-being.

When I took my three-day Reiki Level One training, I had only recently begun to realize that having a daily spiritual health practice was important. This had come into my understanding only after a series of life crises caused me to seriously consider how I had been caring for my inner world, evaluating how a lack of spiritual health practices had impacted my physical and emotional well-being. I had been having a series of chronic health problems, and I was having a lot of anxiety and depression in response to that.

I already had a daily meditation practice leading up to my Reiki Level One training, which had helped ease my anxiety somewhat, and made it easier to cope with pain. While it was not necessary to have a meditation practice, I do feel that it put me in a really great place to receive the training in a way that was right for me. Because I had already been meditating for a few years, the teaching of meditating on the Reiki precepts each day to improve my state of mind seemed very doable. It also made a lot of sense to me; I had already seen how basic mindfulness meditation had begun to heal my mind in a short time. It seemed logical to think that adding simple spiritual concepts to my meditation practice could only increase my healing and clarity of mind.

The Reiki precepts are these:

I will not anger

  • Looking deeply at this, we see that it means more than simply “I will not feel anger”. It is damaging for us to believe that we can avoid or ignore emotions. Rather, it means that once we notice initial feelings of anger arise within us, we will not dwell on them or feed them. (As our thoughts are prone to do.) Additionally, we will not use our own feelings of anger to inflame anger (or other harmful emotions, such as worry) in others.

Hurry energy is a combination of worry and anger, if we look at it deeply, so be mindful of it. Of course, there will be times when we need to focus on getting somewhere or getting something done by a deadline, yet causing a rushed feeling in yourself or others doesn’t help. I once heard the phrase “late is late; why agitate?” It is so true!

I will not worry

  • Like anger, we look deeply at our initial feelings of anxiety or worry. We do not ignore or shove them aside, but acknowledge them, then opt not to feed them or dwell on them. We allow these feelings to exist as they are, with kindness, yet, choosing that same kindness, we allow them to pass without allowing our thoughts to increase the emotion with (potentially untrue) stories about our emotions. Additionally, we don’t feed our emotions of worry to others, causing them to be upset as well.

To practice these first two precepts deeply, we have to be willing to accept that our emotions are not true, in and of themselves. They do not contain facts but reflect to us our perceptions of things. Our perceptions are not facts, so we have to be careful that we don’t allow them to lead us to react and to harm ourselves or others, causing upset and imbalance where none is warranted. This is the root cause of all ultimate harm.

I will be grateful

  • Be grateful for everything. Small things, large things, and even things that seem difficult to you now. It is often those things that we look back on later and realize they helped us grow or created a helpful or lovely circumstance that could not have occurred otherwise. Every situation has brought you to where you are now and shaped you into who you are and who can become now. And maybe it brought to you the people that you love dearly, as well.

I Forgave and I Became Grateful

I will be kind

  • Always be kind, even if only in your own heart and your own thoughts. We can’t directly interact with harmful people or situations, but we can teach ourselves to be kind in all cases in our hearts and our minds. What comes out of our hearts and minds is what shapes them. Therefore, it is those things that can truly harm us.

Be kind in your actions as well. Something as simple as a smile can make a huge difference and is so rare in this modern world where we are separated by screens all day. Smile and share a kind and joyful word with others! It has never been more important!

I will be honest

  • Be honest with yourself first and foremost. If you are honest with yourself while meditating on this and the other precepts, you will do fine. Notice your own habits. Those are the ones that you can correct, and the ones that will lead to understanding each one of these precepts and how they are interrelated.

Be honest in your language and in your dealings with others. Don’t falsely accuse others, nor misuse your words or actions. Always behave impeccably. This is also rare in the modern world. It leads to everyone feeling as though they should be afraid of others, even fearing the kindness of others. To change this, we have to start within ourselves, by being impeccably honest and always kind. Those who are part of the world may not see it and may even accuse us of being otherwise. We don’t do it for praise – we do it to heal ourselves and to heal the world. Do not lash out at those who are fearful and can’t accept love and kindness. We keep being loving. That is our truth.

While you may have heard that Reiki Level One training is the path to becoming a Reiki Master and earning a living as a Reiki healer, Reiki Level One training in the Traditional Usui Reiki Method is about something deeper than that. In this tradition, it is about learning a spiritual practice that contributes to the lifelong growth and health of yourself and your family. I have personally found that it can also become a spiritual practice we share with our pets, contributing to both their growth and health as well as our own. For almost 10 years, I have loved teaching others to share this with their own pets.

Many people who take Reiki Level One in the Traditional Usui Method never opt to go beyond Level One. They have all that they ever need in Level One. They feel a balance in body, mind, heart, soul, and spirit as they begin to practice daily self-Reiki and meditate on the precepts. Their families experience the same. Often entire families will take Reiki Level One training in the Usui Tradition, so that each of them has this valuable lifelong spiritual practice.

Reiki Level One Training – The One Tool You Need

You may have also heard that the symbols are necessary for Reiki to work. This is not true at all! It is a misunderstanding that has grown rapidly as Reiki and the internet have grown more widely popular, along with each other. Reiki Level One uses no symbols, and this personal spiritual practice remains the basis for all other levels of Reiki practice. Animal Reiki uses no symbols at all and is based entirely in Level One teachings.

You don’t need to take Level Two or Master level to gain the symbols “so your Reiki will work” or “be stronger”. These are misconceptions about Reiki. Even at a distance, Reiki works equally well, even at Level One. And mastering the practice of Reiki comes from… practice! Not from an attunement. Traditionally, to become a Reiki Master, you needed years of practice and to be accepted into an apprenticeship, which took many years more to complete.

At its core, the practice of Reiki consists of commitment to daily self-Reiki and meditation on the Reiki precepts. This, along with living in a way that is based out of what unfolds from these daily sessions, can bring a sense of calm and stillness to your mind and body. You may develop understanding and mental insights that arise from your meditation on the precepts, a sense of peace that develops from taking time for a quiet, prayerful activity each day, and shifts that develop in your body due to time spent in quiet.

None of these is mystical or magical. Scientists have studied meditation and prayerful experiences (for both those praying and those prayed for) since the 1990’s and 2000’s and found that the mind and body show states of calmness and repair while in these practices. It is now called the rest and restore response – the opposite of the fight or flight response – and it allows us to begin making little rebalances and repairs from being in fight or flight (or stress) mode.

You can see why this very deeply spiritual practice, implementing the placing of hands for deep quieting of the body, and meditation on deep, yet simple, fundamental spiritual concepts is beneficial. Especially when it is focused on for its own purposes. Reiki Level One in the Usui Tradition is best when it is not thought of as a steppingstone to being a Reiki Master, or as a tool to “fix” all that’s “wrong” with you or others. It is a deeply meaningful spiritual tool that is often overlooked and skimmed over in our fast-paced society.

It’s so important in today’s world to slow down. The first step can be re-framing Usui Tradition Level One training. If you haven’t yet taken Level One training, consider taking it with a Traditional Usui teacher like myself. If you have already taken Level One training or beyond, consider dropping back into daily self-Reiki practice and meditation with the Reiki precepts. If it has been some time since you took Reiki Level One and you feel disconnected from the practice, longing for a refresher course, or you just didn’t feel a connection with your teacher, and would like to take the course again, I encourage you to find a course and a teacher you resonate with!

I highly recommend the traditional 3-day Level One training. They are like a retreat, and they set you on the right start, in the right frame of mind. Whatever you choose, I wish you the best on your path to Reiki Light! I am praying for all of you!
