Daily Show” host Jon Stewart went back nearly 250 years to check on President Donald Trump after the weekend’s nationwide “No Kings” demonstrations to see if the protesters had a point.

“It’s starting to feel like there might be something to this whole king thing,” he said, then went to “the source” for the “No Kings” movement: The Declaration of Independence and its 27 grievances against King George III.

“All right, the Declaration says, ‘He has kept among us in times of peace, standing armies without the consent of our legislatures,’” Stewart read. “Done.”

As he spoke, headlines about Trump’s use of the National Guard in U.S. cities appeared.

“‘Cutting off our trade with all parts of the world,’” Stewart continued. “Ooooh. That does sound familiar.”

Trump has initiated a series of trade wars and imposed tariffs, increasing prices in the United States while also making it hard for U.S. companies to do business overseas as other nations retaliate.

“‘He has obstructed the administration of justice,’” Stewart read. “It’s getting hot in here. And here’s one more: ‘He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us.’”

With that last one, an image of the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection carried out by Trump supporters in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election appeared on the screen.

“I mean, come on,” Stewart said. “I’m calling it. Look, maybe Trump isn’t an all-powerful king, the kind who can do whatever he wants, but he’s undeniably king-adjacent, king-esque, moving for more.”
