Haven’t bought a pair of pyjamas in forever? Check out our guide to the best brands making more ethical sleepwear and sustainable pyjamas.
What to consider when looking for more sustainable pyjamas
Few things feel as good as climbing into bed under fresh sheets after a long day. It helps if you’re wearing cute PJs, of course, and even better if they’re of the more ethical variety. Some of the most common concerns when investing in pyjamas are about materials: after all, since polyester and nylon aren’t breathable, they often leaves us feeling uncomfortable in the night when we get too hot. On top of that, they’re just not sustainable, since they’re made from fossil fuels that pollute the planet. Our suggestion? Plant-based materials like organic cotton and linen will help regulate your temperature through the night, whilst also having a lower impact on the planet.
Elsewhere, you’ll want to make sure that the people who made your sleepwear were treated ethically and paid a living wage, as well as having job and financial security, and good workplace health and safety—notes about that can be found in the labour section of a brand’s rating page in our directory, and if you’re unsure about anything, you could always reach out to the brand itself.
There’s animal welfare to consider, too—and if you’re wanting to avoid animal materials completely, be on the lookout for mother-of-pearl buttons, which are common on high-end sleepwear and can slip through the net. Opt for materials like TENCEL Lyocell and bamboo in place of silk.
To help you find the most sustainable options, we’ve curated some of brands that make sleepwear and are rated highly against Good On You’s sustainability methodology. These “Good” and “Great” brands have everything you need to have a good and peaceful night, including luxurious matching sets, bamboo-based jams, and soft and comfortable kids’ pyjamas, too.
