Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayNow that progressive candidate Nithya Raman has passed former reality star Spencer Pratt in the ongoing Los Angeles mayoral vote count, Pratt and his supporters — including President Donald Trump — have been crashing out.
Both men shared conspiracy theories on social media as Raman’s lead became clear Sunday evening.
“A net swing of more than 43,000 votes since Tuesday.. 43,000, huh? Where have I seen that number before...?” Pratt wrote Sunday on X, retweeting a report from Fox 11 LA that stated Raman was leading Pratt by about that many votes.
“Probably nothing,” he added.
His response came alongside a photo of a report that said there are about 43,000 homeless people in Los Angeles, promoting the idea of election fraud despite a total lack of evidence.
While Pratt had an early lead on election night, Raman has surged as mail-in ballots have been counted.
As of Monday, Raman is in second place with 27.1% of the votes counted so far, and Pratt has 26.7% of the votes. She will likely face off against incumbent Karen Bass in the nonpartisan mayoral election in November.
Trump, who endorsed Pratt, took to Truth Social on Monday afternoon to say it’s “not possible” for Pratt to have lost, similarly promoting the baseless theory that the election had been rigged.
“Not possible for Spencer Pratt to have lost the L.A. runoffs after the big lead he had,” Trump wrote. “3rd World Nation. Rigged Elections! Now they’ll be working on great guy Steve Hilton. Won’t have results for, possibly, TWO WEEKS, according to officials.” (Hilton is running as a Republican in the state’s gubernatorial race.)
Counting votes in California typically takes more time than in other states because an estimated 80% of voters cast their ballots by mail.
On Monday, CNN data analyst Harry Enten said any talk of a rigged election is the “dumbest conspiracy theory” he’d ever heard. Enten pointed out that if establishment Democrats had rigged the election, then Pratt would advance in order to give Bass a better shot at remaining mayor, as she is the establishment choice.
Polling shows that against Pratt, Bass would have won by 18 points, but if she faces off against Raman, she might lose.
Enten said that Trump’s endorsement of Pratt did him no favors, considering that Los Angeles residents heavily disapprove of Trump, and just 15% of LA voters are registered as Republicans.
Mail-in ballots will continue to be accepted until Tuesday; the counting process must be completed and certified within 30 days.
Benny Johnson, a far-right political commentator, also promoted a conspiracy theory, falsely saying Raman conceded the race on election night and was in a “historically insurmountable” third place.
“This was before ‘the machine’ took over,” Johnson wrote Sunday on X.
Raman did not concede in her speech on election night, but noted that “many thousands of votes may be counted in the days ahead, and we may not get an answer we like.”
Elon Musk responded to Johnson, promoting the same conspiracy theory and writing, “They forgot to inform their puppet.”
